| In 1820 Secretary of State John Quincy Adams commissioned the engraver William J. Stone of Washington to reproduce the United States Declaration of Independence using copper plate engraving. In this procedure, the original document was moistened, ink was lifted from it, transferred to a copperplate, and then engraved. This created a perfect copy of the original. This was completed in 1823. Stone printed 201 copies of the engraved facsimile on the same type of parchment on which the original had been written. |
